 The Games in the Soviet capital from July 19 till August 3 were boycotted by most of the Western countries because of the invasion and war, which communist USSR waged in Afghanistan. 5,217 athletes (1,125 women) from 80 nations participated. Bulgaria won 8 gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze medals. Titles went to Stoyan Delchev (Gymnastics-artis tic), Lyubomir Lyubenov (Canoe), boxer Petar Lessov, weightlifters Yanko Roussev and Asen Zlatev, wrestlers Valentin Raychev, Issmail Abilov and Georgi Raykov. Vice- champions became wrestlers Alexander Tomov, Miho Dukov, Ivan Yankov and Slavcho Tchervenkov, weightlifters Stefan Dimitrov, Blagoy Blagoev, Rumen Alexandrov and Valentin Hristov, athlete Maria Vergova, Dimitar Zaprianov in judo, Lyubomir Lyubenov and Vanya Gesheva in Canoe/Kayak, Georgi Gadjev, Petar Mandadjiev and Svetoslav Ivanov (team Equesterian), the Rowing W4+ team of Iskra Velinova, Rita Todorova, Mariika Modeva, Ginka Gyurova and Nadya Filipova (c), the women's Basketball and men's Volleyball teams. Bronze medals took Stoyan Delchev, ath lete Petar Petrov, boxer Ivaylo Marinov, wrestlers Mladen Mladenov, Pavel Pavlov and Nermedin Selimov, Lyubcho Dyakov and Petar Zaprianov (Shooting), weightlifters Mincho Pashov and Nedelcho Kolev, Ilian Nedkov (Judo), Siika Kelbecheva and Stoyanka Gruycheva Rowing (W2-), Mariana Serbezova, Anka Bakova, Rumeliana Boncheva, Dolores Nakova and Anka Evtimova (W4x), Mincho Nikolov, Lyubomir Petrov, Ivo Russev and Bogdan Dobrev Rowing (M4X), in Canoe/Kayak Borislav Ananiev and Nikolay Ilkov (C-2), Borislav Borissov, Lazar Hristov, Bozhidar Milenkov and Ivan Manev (K-4), the women's volleyball team.
The host athletes took most of the medals - 195 (80 gold).
